ModiFly in wind - no problem!
Submitted by carlos on Tue, 07/28/2009 - 9:51amI just got an email from Ken Myers, editor of the Ampeer. He reports on the ModiFly’s ability to handle high winds:
“Hi Carlos,
Just a quick note. I went out flying on Sunday, not unusual, but the winds were 16 mph gusting to 21 the whole time we were at the field. Guess what the only plane I flew was? Ah, too easy. Yep, the ModiFly. Lots of fun! Actually, Keith Shaw was the only one to “risk” one of his better aircraft to the wind gods. He flew his big, beautiful Bearcat. It flew great, as he is an excellent pilot and knows that the left hand is for, but the landing was interesting with quite a pucker factor, even for Keith.
Thanks for a fun little plane that can handle the wind,
Ken”
Book mention in August 2009 issue of Model Aviation
Submitted by carlos on Mon, 07/27/2009 - 3:11pmBob Aberle mentioned my first book, RCadvisor’s Model Airplane Design Made Easy, in his Frequenty Asked Questions column in the August 2009 issue of Model Aviation magazine. He said:
“Carlos has a nice, easy-to-read style that is often humorous, to keep your attention. I give it top marks and I’m glad to have it on my shelf for ready reference.”
By my count, this is the fourth mention of my book in Model Aviation magazine. Wow! That must be some sort of record!
ModiFly book review and flight report at the Ampeer
Submitted by carlos on Mon, 07/20/2009 - 1:07pmKen Myers, one of the reviewers for the ModiFly book, just published the August 2009 issue of his Ampeer newsletter. He liked the model airplane design described in the book so much, he went ahead and built one! The newsletter discusses his impressions of the book, the modifications he made to the design, and the result of his flight testing. His conclusion?
“All in all this little plane has been a very pleasant experience and well worth the build.”
New All Things That Fly interview
Submitted by carlos on Mon, 07/20/2009 - 7:56amJamie and Diggs interviewed me again! Is that our third time? We talked about my new book, the calculator, Kline-Fogleman airfoils, and airfoil aerodynamics. Enjoy!
Crash Cast interview
Submitted by carlos on Sun, 07/19/2009 - 4:23pmI chatted this morning with Crash and Dorsal from The Crash Cast. We talked about my calculator, books and projects I’m working on right now. I had a great time!

Submitted by carlos on Wed, 07/08/2009 - 10:37am
The books arrived yesterday and the flight packs just got here. All of the orders that haven’t shipped will be going out today. Right before I take an order to the post office, I change the status to Completed and an email goes out.
new book: RCadvisor's ModiFly
Submitted by carlos on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 2:25pmHow does an original model airplane design get created?
I’ve always wanted to read a book that answered that question. A book that takes me by the hand and shows me how it’s really done. One that tells me not just the what and the how, but also the all important why. Since nobody had ever written such a book, I decided I had to do it myself. This is that book.
Experience firsthand the joys of building and flying your very own model airplane design. Put into practice the lessons from my previous book, RCadvisor’s Model Airplane Design Made Easy. Follow along as we design, build, and fly a modern radio-controlled model airplane.
Design Goals
Incorporating the latest innovations and research results, the design is deceptively simple in appearance. However, 20 prototypes and 15 hours of flight testing were required before a design finally met all the goals:
- Build it in just one day for less than $5.
- A joy to fly with no bad habits.
- Sturdy enough to survive hard landings.
- Build either a park flyer or an indoor slow flyer.
- New pilots can fly it without ailerons.
- Easy to build for new scratch builders.
- Kid-friendly free flight glider version.
- Use inexpensive electric power systems and radio gear.
- Great starting point for your own unique designs.
You can easily find the construction materials for the airplane at local discount or craft stores. So what are you waiting for?
Design Process
The book starts by describing the goals and the long prototyping process that led to the final design. Along the way you get to see firsthand the challenges that creating an innovative design presents. Learn the reasoning behind all the decisions that led to this unique design.
A stand-alone book, it is complemented nicely by RCadvisor’s online model airplane calculator and my first model airplane design book. Picking up where that book left off, it takes a very pragmatic approach to the entire design process.

My book made it to the Battery Clinic - July Model Aviation magazine
Submitted by carlos on Sun, 06/28/2009 - 9:39amRed Scholefield was kind enough to recommend my book in his July 2009 Battery Clinic column in Model Aviation magazine. He said:
“[The book] uses straightforward explanations to teach important design tradeoffs. The latest research and techniques are explained in clear language.”
Another book mention in June 2009 Model Aviation!
Submitted by carlos on Wed, 05/20/2009 - 8:04pm
This one was a total surprise! Small-Field Flying columnist, Paul Bradley, mentions my book in the June 2009 issue of Model Aviation magazine. This is what Paul had to say:
“The book reads more like a conversation at the flying field than a presentation of information with technical underpinnings. Essential technical relationships are explained, but they are easy to follow and presented in a context that relates to real-world applications.”
